MICHIGAN CITY | Iraq War veterans from Michigan City and surrounding areas will be honored with a parade this summer.
The veterans deserve the recognition, said John Wantuch, a Gulf War veterans and LaPorte County veterans service officer.
"I think it's the greatest thing," Wantuch said.
The parade is scheduled for June 30 as part of a full slate of activities during the annual Michigan City Summer Festival.
The Iraq War came to a close Dec. 15, and the last of the American troops in that country have returned home.
"Those guys have come home, and all across the country you've seen parades planned and canceled. Well, let's have one here," said Lou Weber, a member of the Michigan City Summer Festival board.

MICHIGAN CITY — A "Free Fly" kite festival could take place along the Washington Park beach on the weekend of the Summer Festival's parade and drum corps show this year.
Lifelong Michigan City resident Joel Majot will organize the kite festival pending approval from the Michigan City Park Department and provided he secures the necessary insurance coverage.
"This has always been a dream of mine," said Majot, who is a member of the American Kitefliers Association and the Hoosier Kitefliers Society. "Organizing an event in my home town is everything to me — and Michigan City is the perfect place for something like this along the beautiful lake."

MICHIGAN CITY — Nearly 200 people packed Rodini’s Restaurant, 4125 Franklin St., Sunday afternoon to support the Summer Festival committee, the group of 12 volunteers who plan some of the city’s most exciting summer events.
Committee member Mike Dempsey, who chaired the Rodini’s fundraiser, said the committee had traditionally sponsored a ‘Meltdown Dinner’ in January or February to help fund the events, but nothing had been done in recent years.
“We wanted something for the winter months,” he said, noting the success of Sunday’s brunch prepared by the local restaurant.
“Ticket sales were very good and we hope to do it again next year,” Dempsey said.

All part of Summer Festival, the events were approved to return to the city this year by the Michigan City Park Board on Wednesday night during its first meeting since moving operations from Michigan City Senior Center to City Hall.
