DIY Science Projects with Kids

Lava Lamp

Lava Lamp

This is a really easy and fun experiment you can try at home with the ingredients that might already be in your kitchen. It is also kid-friendly, so you do not have to worry about any special equipment.

What you need:

  • Clean plastic bottle
  • Vegetable oil
  • Fizzing pills, for example, Alka Seltzer
  • Food dye

Start by filling the plastic with water, about ¼ of the bottle. Next, pour the vegetable oil until the bottle is almost full. At this step, you have to wait a little bit, so that water and oil fully separate. Add the food dye of your choice, and wait for a couple of minutes. Next, take the frizzy pill and break it in half, then drop it in the bottle, and there you go! A lava lamp made at home. You can also use torchlight to light up the bottle from the bottom for a better effect.

Volcano at Home

For this DIY science experiment, you will definitely need a measuring cup and some gloves just in case. Make sure the area where you are conducting an experiment on is covered because it will get messy.

What you need for the volcano experiment:

  • Clean 2l plastic bottle
  • 10 ml of dish soap
  • 100 ml of cold water
  • 400 ml of white vinegar
  • Food dye
  • Baking soda slurry

First, you need to make baking soda slurry. For this, take a cup and fill it about ½ with baking soda, and then just add water until you fill the cup. After you have prepared the slurry, you can continue on with the experiment as it has to be done fast and with precision. In the empty 2l plastic bottle, add vinegar, water, dish soap, and 2 drops of food dye. Once you have that ready, mix the baking soda slurry with water until it is liquid. At this step, you can ask your kids to step back and be ready to run! Pour the baking soda slurry into the bottle and step back, and there you have your volcano.

Snow Globe

This one is really fun and can actually stay at your home for a while. You do not have to make it in the Christmas theme, it can be anything your kid wants.

What you need:

  • An empty jar of any size and a lid
  • Water
  • Glycerin
  • Glitter of any kind (can be white, if you want to make the “Snow” globe)
  • Small toys or anything that your kid wants to have in the snow globe
  • Glue

Take the glue and toys of your choice and glue them to the lid. Afterward, pour glycerin into the jar, and fill it up about halfway. Then add water until it fills the jar. Stir to mix both ingredients. Now, it is time to use glitter. This is a step where your kids can be as creative as they want, so you can use different colors of glitter, but in small amounts. After you are satisfied with the amount of glitter, add more water to fill the jar to the end. Gently screw the lid to close the jar, wipe off any excess water, and there you have it – a Snow Globe!
